KBIA + Heartwood = Art Fun
We are excited to announce that this year, for the first time, KBIA will partner with Heartwood College of Art in Kennebunk to offer a unique array of arts courses for campers ages 9 and older. All classes run two hours per day, two days a week, for a total of four hours, allowing children the time to delve deeply into the material. Heartwood College faculty will teach all classes.
Polymer Clay
Amazing patterns and designs abound with the beautiful colors and techniques of polymer clay. Make incredible beads, pins, earrings and bracelets. Cover salt shakers, candle sticks or screwdriver handles. Once you start, you won’t want to stop!
Drawing and Painting
Bring the beauty of flowers and natural forms to life while observing the details that capture the essence of summer. Learn to illustrate some of nature’s most interesting objects. Work in water media, ink or pencil to create a world on paper.
Book Arts and Paste Paper
Learn the art of hand-stitched book binding. Codex, Japanese Stab and Accordion are just a few of the techniques that we will explore as you make your own book covers and signatures. Also, learn the art of making Paste Paper. These beautiful paper colors and patterns enhance bookmaking, cardmaking, collage and origami.
Quilting
Students will learn how to master the traditional art of piecing fabric and then venture into their own designs and color ways. The strong graphics of the Amish geometrics, the exciting crazy quilts of the 20th century and the possibilities beyond traditional quilting will fuel students’ creativity.
Chinese Calligraphy and Sumi Painting
Learn the art of Chinese brush painting. This is a 3,000-year-old tradition using Sumi ink, bamboo brushes, a carved ink stone and rice paper. Learn about Chinese characters, a real picture language as well as such beautiful subjects as bamboo, mountains and orchids.

We have expanded our bundling to the afternoon!
We have added a bundled set of classes for ages 4 to 6 every week. Swimming will be split into two groups, by age and ability, but the other classes in this bundle will be multi-aged. For Weeks 1, 3, 5, and 7, we will have a single bundled group of children ages 7 to 10. This afternoon bundle for ages 7 to 10 is run only on alternate weeks when the waterfront has sailing in the morning and conflicts with the morning bundle. The schedule will run as follows:

Bundled Class Schedule Reminder!
All bundled classes are still available for individual sign-ups. KBIA cannot provide supervision outside of class time for children unless they are enrolled in a Bundled Class Schedule or Adventures. We worked hard to minimize class conflicts for children participating in the Bundled Class Schedule.
Counselor in Training (CIT) Program for Ages 13-14
The CIT program emphasizes on-the-job training, supervised instruction, and lessons in CPR and First Aid. Each CIT will be assigned 12 or more flexible hours of service activities per week. CITs are required to register for the CIT class, as well as complete a CIT application. CITs must enroll in at least two consecutive weeks, but are encouraged to take as many weeks as possible.
Tennis Program
The Tennis Program offers many options:
Tennis Team continues to provide opportunities to compete in tournaments and USTA matches.
Beginning Tennis will give our youngest players an introduction to tennis.
Stroke Development will emphasize basic strokes, including forehand, backhand, volleys and serves, and will include an introduction to rules, scoring, etiquette, and game play.
Advanced Tennis will help further refine various strokes for more advanced players and will include instruction in singles and doubles play and game strategy.
Waterfront Program
We are continuing to expand the Waterfront Program to better serve a wide range of abilities and sailing interests. For children ages 11+ who would like to sail competitively, we offer Sailing – Race Team. This class meets for three-and-a-half hours a day, three days a week, and focuses on racing skills in a variety of boats, including Optis, Lasers and 420s. For children ages 9-10, there is the Sailing – Opti Race Team, which meets for two-and-a-half hours a day, three days a week. Both Race Teams travel to select M.I.R.C. Regattas on Wednesdays. For children ages 9+ who don’t wish to focus intensely on developing racing skills, we offer a sailing skills class to develop children’s ability to enjoy leisurely sailing. This class meets for two-and-a-half hours a day, three days a week.
We have two other new courses on the waterfront this year for ages 9 and older. The Kayaking Trip is for our more experienced paddlers and will allow them to go on a five-hour trip that includes paddling to a destination and beaching the kayaks for a snack break. Island Picnic at Sea is a chance to go out with Captain Todd Eveleth in a motorized boat to a lunch spot. Life jackets and closed-toe shoes are required for all waterfront activities.
Private Instruction
Private instruction is available. Contact the KBIA office to make arrangements.
