Please keep in mind that KBIA processes registration forms as they are received. You’ll have a better chance of getting into the classes you prefer if you return the required forms and payment quickly. All children must be the specified age for each class by June 15, 2011.
Basketball – All the Fundamentals!

Book Arts

Learn the art of hand-stitched book binding. Codex, Japanese Stab and Accordion are just a few of the techniques that we will explore as you make your own book covers and signatures. Also, learn the art of making Paste Paper. These beautiful paper colors and patterns enhance bookmaking, cardmaking, collage and origami.
Bundled Class Schedule

Ages: 4-10
Classes have again been bundled together to give children a three-hour period of KBIA programming with staff supervision included in between classes. Parents drop their child off in time for the 9 AM class and return to pick-up their child at noon. Space is limited to 12 children per age group for each bundled time period. Register early!
Bundled Schedules for Weeks 1-8: The class bundles are the same except for a choice of either swimming or reading. The swim class includes a half-hour swim lesson and a half-hour of supervised time to change clothes and play. Indicate your preference of either swimming or reading on the Registration Form.

We have expanded our bundling to the afternoon!
We have added a bundled set of classes for ages 4 to 6 every week. Swimming will be split into two groups, by age and ability, but the other classes in this bundle will be multi-aged. For Weeks 1, 3, 5, and 7, we will have a single bundled group of children ages 7 to 10. This afternoon bundle for ages 7 to 10 is run only on alternate weeks when the waterfront has sailing in the morning and conflicts with the morning bundle. The schedule will run as follows:

Counselor in Training (CIT) Program
Instructor: Counselor Program Coordinator

The CIT program emphasizes o- the-job training, supervised instruction, and lessons in CPR and First Aid. Each CIT will be assigned 12 or more flexible hours of service activities per week. CITs are required to register for the CIT class, as well as complete a CIT Application. CITs must enroll in at least two consecutive weeks, but are encouraged to take as many weeks as possible.
Chinese Calligraphy and Sumi Painting

Learn the art of Chinese brush painting. This is a 3,000-year-old tradition using Sumi ink, bamboo brushes, a carved ink stone and rice paper. Learn about Chinese characters, a real picture language as well as such beautiful subjects as bamboo, mountains and orchids.
Craftmeisters

Creative Arts

Students will explore art concepts such as shape, color, line and texture.
They will create nature themed art projects that require multiple steps.
Projects may take two to three class periods to complete. Some classes

Critter Cruise

Cruise the Kennebunk coastline while pulling up lobster traps and exploring the many “critters” that live in the ocean. Learn about lobsters, crabs, sea urchins, starfish and much more!

Diving

Learn the art and grace of diving. Covered dives include the pike, back dive, flips and more. WSI-certified instructors supervise and model appropriate techniques, with emphasis on technique and safety. Class levels are age- and skill-appropriate.
Drama

Emerging actors act out their favorite nursery rhymes and explore movement through traditional circle games and songs. Pantomime and imagination games are also played. Up-and=coming actors explore vocal expression and emotions while acting out character play and improvisation. More experienced actors learn how to prepare for a role, use movement, vocal exercises and character study to develop short scenes, skits and monologues for class and camp performances.
Family Cove Walk

This summer join us for a Cove Walk, a great activity for families with kids of all ages. Please register at the office prior to the walk. Cove Walks are scheduled around low tides on Saturday, July 9, 12 to 2 PM; Sunday, July 10, 12 to 2 PM; Sunday, August 7, 11 AM to 1 PM; and Sunday, August 21, 10 AM to 12 PM. Cove Walks are open to nonmembers, so please help us spread the word.
Fishing

Learn fishing instruction from a certified Coast Guard Captain! Trolling, live bait and bottom fishing are just a few of the techniques that we’ll explore. Open water, near shore, river, and bay fishing are addressed. Participants learn about proper rigging, rod set-up and local fishing areas. Fishing rods are provided.
Class Requirements: Participants must bring their own life jacket and closed-toe water shoes.
Fitness – Intensive Fall Sports Prep

Prepare for the fall sports season with this outdoor fitness boot camp. High-intensity workouts are geared specifically to high school athletes who want to maintain and improve their conditioning over the summer. Boost cardio, endurance, muscular strength, agility and flexibility by burning major calories and sculpting lean muscle. Have some fun, too! This class is taught by Luke Gullick, a certified National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) professional.
Golf

Instruction emphasizes proper grip, stance and balance while incorporating etiquette, rules and the history of golf.
Ages: 7-8
Instruction emphasizes swing fundamentals, plus the rules and etiquette of golf. Course play is incorporated as scheduling allows.
Ages: 9+
Supervised play using different tournament formats. Clinics covering all aspects of the game are given before play begins. Minimum of nine holes played each week, more if scheduling allows.
Class Requirements: Putter, iron (6 or 7) and a wood are required. Proper attire is required: collared shirt, golf shoes and no jeans.
Island Exploration

Each trip explores a different island in the Cape Porpoise harbor. Walk out over the flats, swim, play games and collect island treasures. Wear a bathing suit and closed-toe water shoes for climbing over rocks.

Island Picnic at Sea

Island Picnic at Sea is a chance to go out with Captain ToddEveleth in a motorized boat to a lunch spot.

Jewelry – Beadworks

Learn basic jewelry techniques while making your own signature designs. This class uses a variety of materials like beads, nickel, hemp, wire and leather to create earrings, bracelets, and necklaces. "Beaddazzle" items such as bookmarks and votive holders. You will also create your very own clay beads using sculpey clay and treasures from the beach!

KBIA Adventures

KBIA Adventures is a program that keeps children actively engaged in between their KBIA classes. In addition to providing fun activities, the staff is responsible for keeping Adventures kids properly hydrated and protected from the sun. The staff is also responsible for dropping off and picking up children in between classes. KBIA Adventures is available for a full or half days. Daily arrangements are available with permission of the Program Administrator. Enrollment is limited.

Kinderbeads

The objective of this class is to encourage younger campers to work with sensory exploration and develop fine motor skills. The projects will be "make and take" and will be completed in one or two class periods.

Marine Biology

Explore the tide pools between KBIA and the extended rocks of Strawberry Island and Great Hill Road. Learn the names and ecology of the plants and animals that live in the inter-tidal zone.

Movie Night

Each Wednesday night, following the family campfire and barbecue at Mother’s Beach, KBIA hosts an age-appropriate movie in the Smith House. Snacks and soft drinks can be purchased during intermission. Children can pre-register on the enclosed Registration Forms, at the office prior to the film or at the door.
New England Aquarium-KBIA Exchange

KBIA/New England Aquarium Marine Biology Exchange
Don’t miss the chance to participate in this exciting community program. KBIA and the Community Outreach Program at the New England Aquarium are partnering to host the second annual New England Marine Biology Exchange.

KBIA will host the first of two New England Marine Biology Exchange Days in July, followed by a visit to the New England Aquarium later that month. Spend the day at the New England Aquarium and experience the world of water by seeing the Aquarium’s 50+ exhibits and thousands of marine animals. Activities for the day include a tour of the Aquarium, a lunch social hour and a behind-the-scenes visit to the wet lab study area on the dock. An aquarium scavenger hunt is also planned for the younger children.
Activities on both exchange days are age-appropriate. Enrollment is limited. Transportation to and from KBIA is provided; drop-off and pick-up is at KBIA. A bag lunch is required.

Budding readers begin their journey in reading and writing. Fun, hands-on literacy activities such as read-out-loud, shared reading, songs, poems and much more. Sand Creations

Learn how to build and play games using sand, sticks, rocks, shells and other fun objects. We’ll make sand sculptures of animals, fish – even ourselves! We’ll also create and play on a miniature golf course and hopscotch court.
Seals

Have fun learning about the seals of Maine! We’ll view a colony of seals residing on “Seal Rocks” from Marshall’s Point in Cape Porpoise. Then it’s off to the Marine Animal Rehabilitation Center located at the University of New England to learn how they help rescued seals. We’ll wrap-up our class by making and decorating a wooden seal. Don’t forget to bring your lunch!
Starfish

Starfish is a weekly morning drop-off program designed for preschool-age children. Starfish offers a variety of beach-themed activities and is taught by an experienced preschool teacher well-versed in the developmental needs of this age group. A Starfish morning includes a 30-minute swim lesson, story time, nature time and a craft project. The Starfish program is staffed at a 4-to-1 ratio to ensure appropriate supervision of children at all times.

Surfing

Pearling, catching a rail, walking the board — learn these terms and more as you begin to develop your surfing skills. Practice correct paddling, standing on a board and exiting a wave. Emphasis is on safety and technique. Surf etiquette as well as the differences between board and surfing styles is also taught.
Class Requirements: Surfboards and wetsuits are provided for the class. Participants who bring their own wetsuit will be refunded $5. Don’t forget a towel and sunscreen!
Swimming

Following the American Red Cross standards, featuring six levels of training, lessons are conducted from pre-beginner to advanced swimmer. Progress is charted, and level completion rewarded. Many of our instructors hold WSI Certification and are aided by Counselors and CITs, for a low student-teacher ratio. Class levels are age- and skill-appropriate. The pool is heated to 78 degrees.
Class Requirements: Student’s height must be 3-feet and above to participate. Children must be potty-trained — swim diapers are not permitted for sanitary reasons.
Teen Night

Teens get together for some fun and to connect with their peers in an informal setting. Activities may include pizza, campfires, concerts with local musicians, casino night, barbecues, beach games and more. Teens help select their own activities and design events throughout the summer.

This class provides our youngest players with an introduction to the game. Forehand, backhand and volley strokes. Larger foam balls and low compression (low bounce) balls used to make it easier for the kids to hit the balls.

Tennis—Stroke Development

Emphasizes tennis strategy development: rules, scoring, etiquette, singles and doubles strategy and game play format. You can take the daily class at Edgcomb or choose to attend all or a single scrimmage/match offered for that week at another club.
Tennis Team Competition: Opportunities to travel to other clubs and play informal weekly scrimmages, tournaments and USTA matches. Many are held at other clubs and require parent volunteers for car-pooling.

Titles & Tidepools

This class is a stimulating combination of reading and marine biology. Explore our cove to learn about the plants and animals that live there, collect shells and sea glass and then use these beautiful treasures to develop a story. Tween Night

A night of entertainment designed to build friendships and keep the Jr. Teens active. Activities include pizza, movies, dance revolution parties, pool parties, beach games, music, bonfires, karaoke, and more. Jr. Teens will help select their own activities and design other events throughout the summer. KBIA Staff provides support for these events.
Water Polo

Play fun, friendly competitive matches between two teams. Each team uses water skills to put the ball into their opponent’s net. Instruction in the rules and skills of water polo is offered throughout the game.
Waterfront – Kayaking

Meets 2 times a week, 1 hour

A fun class that teaches the basics of kayaking while stressing safety. This class will provide kayakers with the necessary skills to paddle safely, efficiently and with confidence. Participants will learn how to enter, exit, and maneuver their kayak. Once the kayaker has learned the basic skills, they will continue to strengthen their abilities through water games and races in the cove.

Waterfront – Kayaking Trip

This class is for our more experienced paddlers and will allow them to go on a five-hour trip that includes paddling to a destination and beaching the kayaks for a snack break
Waterfront – Sea Fleas

Meets 4 times a week, 3 days for 45 minutes, 1 day for 90 minutes

This class introduces boating and teaches the basics of rowing. Emphasis is on becoming comfortable around the water. This class includes a general introduction to the KBIA cove where the children will row, swim, sing songs, explore Strawberry Island and have fun.

Waterfront – Sailing

Ages: 7+
Meets 3 times a week, 2.5 hours
Cost: $120
Learn about weather and wind, boat rigging, points of sail, knot tying, tacking and jibbing as well as basic boat handling. In order to advance, sailors will have to demonstrate specific skills. Advancing sailors will develop their independent sailing skills. Focus is on sail trim, safety positions, capsize recovery and basic navigation. Participants will also learn to pick up moorings and correctly approach a dock.

Waterfront—Opti Race Team
Ages: 11+
Meets 3 times a week, 2.5 hours

A focused class for our Opti Racers. There is team travel to select M.I.R.C. Regattas and competition against other Maine yacht clubs on Wednesdays. Parents are asked to help with transportation.
Class Requirements: Participants must bring their own life jacket and closed-toe water shoes.
Waterfront—Race Team
Ages: 11+
Meets 3 times a week, 3.5 hours
Cost: $170
The advanced class centers on racing and the ability to sail in a variety of boats, including Chickadees, Optis, Lasers, and 420s. There is team travel to select M.I.R.C. Regattas and competition against other Maine yacht clubs on Wednesdays. Parents are asked to help with transportation.
Class Requirements: Participants must bring their own life jacket and closed-toe water shoes.
Waterfront – Power Boating

Meets 3 times a week, 2 hours
Cost: $120
Classes include instruction on safe boating and coastal navigation. Participants will learn about outboard motors, hull design, anchoring and the rules of the road. GPS and other navigational tools will be introduced. Instruction on how weather impacts boating and the Coast Guard’s rules and recommendations.

Whales & Dolphins

Each week we discover new and fascinating things about these beautiful animals like what and how they eat, how they sleep, and how smart they are. Each week features a new project.

This class for ages 9+ will work collectively to make two Opti boats over the course of the summer to launch in August.
