Swimming right along ...
Article Image
Did you feel it in the air this morning? That cool, unmistakably fall air blowing by the beach was a wake-up call for us all; we only have two weeks left to our summer here at KBIA, and we still have so much more to do! We have laser tag tonight, a Sea Dogs game for tweens this Tuesday, a pool party with pizza on Thursday for the teens, and the fourth annual Reid Sacco Family Regatta on Sunday. That's all in addition to a week's worth of summer sun and fun in the variety of classes we offer every day. With so much going on, we hope you'll join us in making the most of the rest of this summer.

Set sail with us this Sunday

Sailors and spectators alike are invited to KBIA's fourth annual Reid Sacco Family Regatta on Sunday. The day starts with a skipper meeting at 12 PM, followed by sailing at 12:30. Interested participants should register in the office to reserve a KBIA boat or bring their own boat to launch between 285 and 292 Beach Avenue. Due to the shallow nature of the cove, even at high tide, sailors should use an Opti, Laser, Taz or Chickadee watercraft.

A $10 suggested donation per sailor will benefit the Reid Sacco Foundation. The regatta honors a longtime KBIA student and instructor who died of sarcoma at age 20 in 2005. For information on the Reid Sacco Foundation, visit www.reidsaccofoundation.org.

A cheering crowd and new swim flags flying high over the pool created a festive atmosphere for our first home swim meet on Friday. Twenty-two KBIA swimmers of all ages competed against area swimmers (six swimmers from the Sanford YMCA Titans and seven swimmers from Saco Sport and Fitness) in all variety of styles, bringing home medals and ribbons for their efforts. Thanks to a whole team of volunteers, we made it a swimming success. Thank you!

'Paint the Beach'
at the beach

There's no better setting for "Paint the Beach" than the beach! At least that's how we felt Saturday night for our second annual art show and sale with Heartwood College of Art. We had a great crowd out for some art and light fare served up under our tent -- even the predicted showers held off for the event! In case you missed it, check out our Facebook album of artwork. Some of the pieces remain to be sold for $400, with the artist receiving half, and KBIA and Heartwood splitting the remaining proceeds; check with the front office on particular pieces.

Competition in The Cove

For the sixth year, area swimmers swarmed the cove on Sunday for KBIA's Cove Swim. This year we had 14 children compete in the 200-yard swim and 28 swimmers for the 1-mile swim.

Tony tells tale of his friend Tiger

Have your heard the tale of "Tiger"? Last summer our longtime KBIA instructor Tony Viehmann made a new friend, a monarch butterfly with a broken wing. For 18 days Tony cared for his new friend -- and fascinated by this beautiful creature, he captured much of their time on camera. Last fall he compiled those images, along with his tale, for a new book simply named "Tiger," published by Depot Publishing of Kennebunk. His book is available for purchase for $15 in the KBIA store. His autograph, too? Priceless!

Explore Strawberry Island ... start here

While our children more commonly visit the island by walking directly over the sand at low tide, the rocky island is also accessible to the public via our "Gateway to Strawberry Island." KBIA's .34-acre rocky plot on Great Hill Road provides access to Strawberry Island. Just look for our sign at 38 Great Hill Road, right next to the small plot owned by the Kennebunk Land Trust.
